Community-Based Family Medicine Residency Program

About the CBFM Residency Program

In September 2015, CommuniCare partnered with the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) School of Osteopathic Medicine to join the Texas Institute for Graduate Medical Education and Research (TIGMER) residency programs. This collaboration gave rise to the Community-Based Family Medicine Residency Program.

The Community-Based Family Medicine (CBFM) Residency Program at CommuniCare follows the Teaching Health Center model. It provides residents with frontline healthcare training under the guidance of our esteemed board-certified faculty. This program equips future physicians to deliver community-oriented, patient-centered, high-quality primary care, with a focus on serving underserved populations and enhancing overall access to medical treatment.

Residents gain both educational and hands-on clinical experience, preparing them to become skilled community physicians or establish their own private practices. They also have the opportunity to reduce their student loan debt through U.S. government programs that support federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), such as CommuniCare. As a designated rotation site for this TIGMER residency program, CommuniCare is recognized as a leading teaching facility committed to providing the highest level of patient care to those most in need.
